Pride and Prejudice
Jane Austen’s most popular novel. The book I never seem to understand why it is so loved by so many. The movie people oggle over, that I feel doesn’t even come close to the epicness that is Sense and Sensibility. I find it so strange that Pride and Prejudice is the novel, when it comes to Jane Austen. I simply don’t get it.
I also don’t get why so many girls and women swoon over Mr. Darcy. Why? Someone please explain this to me. I don’t at all find the way Mr. Darcy acted and treated those around him attractive. I think if I had personally known him, I would have written him off, never giving him a second thought. I get the characters show growth in the novel, overcoming their flaws enough to find love with eachother, but I just wouldn’t have been able to get over it. Maybe I just hold grudges.
But, if you look at Sense and Sensibility. Wow. That book (or movie) is filled with such wonderful, intruiging characters. I even love to despise Willoughby, and yet have pitty for him in the end. Of all the Jane Austen men, Colonel Brandon stands above the rest. How can Mr. Darcy top that? I just don’t get it. Even Edward has to be better!
All that griping aside, this prompt, of course, has lead me to Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. This is truly a beautiful story of sisters. I also adore how their personalities are different, and portrayed so uniquely, and how the story is filled with so many different types of love. This is by far, my favorite Austen (though I must admit I have yet to read them all). The 2008 film with Charity Wakefield and Hattie Morahan is so incredibly beautiful. They chose perfect actors, and the scenes are just breathtaking. Deffinitely one of my favorite movies.
I, of course, own a beautiful copy of Sense and Sensibility. It is filled with illustrations by Chris Hammond, which I love to find scattered amongst the novel. It is lovely. It is actually the only Austen novel that I own, one I had my eye on for several years and was unable to purchase it because it was too pricey, until I stumbled upon an amazing sale. It is a book I now covet because of that. I am happy I actually have it. Every once in a while, I have to get my fill of the Dashwood sisters and the drama that unfolds while they find their true loves. Who doesn’t love a beautiful love story?
